The Red Hills of Home

Back to Books

The Red Hills of Home tells the life and adventures of Georgia Boy Red, a farm boy who grew up in the southernmost hills of Georgia from the early 1930s to the 1950s. Born during the Great Depression, he came of age during the troubling days of World War II, followed by the Korean War, and life on a farming homestead wasn’t always easy. Yet, despite the hardships of the times, he had a happy childhood roaming those wooded, rolling hills and fishing the Big Lake down on Hurrikin (Hurricane Creek), a place dear to his heart.

His family owned 86 acres of land in a small rural community known as Handtown, where he helped his daddy work their red clay fields, growing tobacco, corn, and cotton, making the most of what they had. He worked hard, but he also had his moments of mischief, as told in this lighthearted narrative.

Georgia Boy Red gives us a glimpse into a simpler place and time—the good ol’ days—and this is his coming-of-age story. From his humble beginnings to adulthood, he shares his fondest memories of the place he calls...the red hills of home.
